The benefits of a one bed garden cabin

Looking to create more space at home? Wondering if a one bed garden room can be a liveable option? Perhaps you’re considering it for your adult kids or as a granny flat. These rooms offer independence with the convenience of family support close by.

One bed garden cabins are gaining popularity due to their cost-effectiveness and ability to offer all the comforts you need in your living area. Even if you decide on a separate structure in your garden, you can link up to mains electricity and other services, enabling heating and lighting options. It’s even feasible to fit in full bathrooms and a kitchen space, making a one bed garden room a tempting choice.
We have a number of different one bed garden canis for you to choose from: The Brittas, the Arklow Loft Cabin, and the Mayo Log Cabin, to name a few.
How about the new planning laws?
When you’re thinking about adding a one bed garden room to your property in Ireland, it’s important to keep planning permission in mind. Rules can differ depending on where you are, so make sure to check with your local council first to know exactly what’s needed before you kick off your project.

What size cabin can you build without planning permission?

In general, adding a garden room or log cabin might not require planning permission if it doesn’t increase the original house’s floor area by more than 40 square metres or if it’s a separate building that meets certain size criteria. Usually, if the building is under 25 square metres and less than 3.9m tall, and it’s going up to the side or back of your house, you’re good to go without needing planning permission. And with the proposed changes to planning permission in Ireland, that 25 square metres will probably rise to 40 square metres, with some restrictions.

Is it legal to live in a log cabin in Ireland?
If you plan on sleeping in the one bed garden room, you’ll need planning permission and nods from other departments. This cosy Scandinavian Log Cabin will become residential once it’s used for sleeping, so it has to meet certain building rules.
Renting a Garden Cabin

If you’re thinking of renting it out, you might have to sign up as a landlord. The local council is the place to go for all the ins and outs – rules can vary, some strict, some more relaxed.
